The Book of nehemiah
Chapter 7
Nehemiah 7: [1] Now it came to pass, when the wall was built, and I had set
up the doors, and the porters and the singers and the Levites were appointed,
In the first 6 chapter of Nehemiah we have the reconstruction
of the wall around Jerusalem
Now we begin a time of reinstruction of the
people.
After
the accomplishing a tremendous achievement, Nehemiah wants to protect the work
1) The Appointment (Vs 1)
The wall around Jerusalem is now complete and the gates
are hung.
The gatekeepers (porters) were appointed their duties.
They must be protectors, uncompromised for
the well being of the city.
The singers and the Levites were appointed to lead in
worship.
They are to lead the people in praise to GOD
They were to explain GODs
word to the people
Nehemiah wants everything to be in order.
“Let everything be done decently and in order”
Nehemiah 7: [2] That I gave my brother Hanani, and
Hananiah the ruler of the palace, charge over
Jerusalem: for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many.
2) The Approval (Vs 2)
Nehemiah is going to turn reins of leadership over to men
that are
Nehemiah was not in this for politics or for authority
Nehemiah chose his brother Hanani.
(Neh 1:2)
(Not
apptd because it was his brother but not restricted
because its brother)
This man had initiative and concern. He was just a
messenger, but GOD promotes him.
Nehemiah also chose Hananiah.
This man was in charge of the palace, which was a
protected fortress.
A. They were
Faithful Men
He was not a talented singer or a
eloquent speaker BUT he was faithful.
1 Cor 4:2 Moreover
it is required in stewards, that a man be found
faithful
Heb 3:1 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers
of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High
Priest
of our profession, Christ Jesus; 2Who
was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his
house.
GOD will not promote men until they prove themselves
faithful.
Mt
25:21, 23
[21] His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been
faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou
into the joy of thy lord.
[23] His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been
faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou
into the joy of thy lord.
Deacons
& their wives must be faithful
1
Tim 3:10 & 11
[10] And let these also first be
proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.
[11] Even so must their wives be
grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.
[12] Let the deacons be the
husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
2
Tim 2:2
[2]And
the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit
thou to
faithful
men, who shall be able to teach others also.
·
If you never learn to follow faithfully you will never
be a leader
B. They were
Fearing Men
These
men feared the LORD GOD
Nehemiah
feared GOD (Neh 5:15)
We
need GOD fearing men in leadership positions in the church
Ps
111:10
[10]
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom
·
Faithful men can be trusted,
GOD fearing men will work in GOD’s priorities.
Nehemiah 7: [3]
And I said unto them, Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun be
hot; and while they stand by, let them shut the doors, and bar them: and
appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one in his watch, and
every one to be over against his house.
3) The Advisement (Vs 3)
A.
The Protecting Ministry of the Watchmen
Nehemiah instructs the leaders to appoint watchmen.
The
walls were to be guarded
Nehemiah instructs the leaders about security
The gates were to be opened when the sun was hot (mid
morning)
The
gates were to be closed early in the evening.
We should watch over the LORDs
House Ezekiel 3:17-19, Acts 20:26,27
Guarding our own souls Acts 20:28 SS 1:6, (1 Cor
10:12).
We
should watch over our own homes and our children. Mark 13:37
Your individual responsibility to the LORD to watch your home, praying &
praising HIM Is 62:6

4) The Administration (Vs 4-73)
Nehemiah knows that the population of the city is low
even though the size of the city is large.
He wants the city to grow and prosper.
He wanted to ensure that a pure people would be living in
the city.
Thus he will order a census and he begins with the
genealogy of those who first came to Jerusalem.
A. Neh
7:6-62 Specified Names
These
families are listed and catalogued in Ezra 2.
These people were obedient to GOD’s
command to come home after 70 years in Babylon’s captivity.
These people travel 900 miles to
begin life awew in the land GOD allows for them.
GOD does not forget one, HE
does not leave one out
Luke

Nehemiah 7: [63] And of the priests: the children of Habaiah,
the children of Koz, the children of Barzillai, which took one of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite to wife,
and was called after their name. [64]
These sought their register among those that were reckoned by genealogy, but it
was not found: therefore were they, as polluted, put from the priesthood. [65] And the Tirshatha
said unto them, that they should not eat of the most holy things, till there
stood up a priest with Urim and Thummim.

Remembrance
[16]
Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to
another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was
written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his
name.
Nehemiah 7: [70] And some of the chief of the fathers gave unto the work. The Tirshatha gave to the treasure a thousand drams of gold, fifty basons, five hundred and thirty priests' garments. [71] And some of the chief of the fathers gave to the treasure of the work twenty thousand drams of gold, and two thousand and two hundred pound of silver. [72] And that which the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand drams of gold, and two thousand pound of silver, and threescore and seven priests' garments. [73] So the priests, and the Levites, and the porters, and the singers, and some of the people, and the Nethinims, and all Israel, dwelt in their cities; and when the seventh month came, the children of Israel were in their cities.
